Die 47 Kilometer lange Küste der Region und die viele Hektar großen Redwood-Wälder, die erkundet und erlebt werden wollen, sind Zeugnis der seit Langem bestehenden Tradition des Naturschutzes und Naturerhalts.
Die facettenreiche Geschichte des Surfsports, die offizielle Sportart Kaliforniens, nahm 1885 ihren Anfang. Damals wagten sich drei hawaiianische Prinzen nahe dem heutigen Main Beach auf Surfboards, die aus Redwood-Holz gefertigt waren, in die Dünung. Dies war die Geburtsstunde des Surfsports auf dem US-Festland. Nur zwei Jahrzehnte später öffnete der Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk als das „Coney Island der Westküste“ seine Pforten mit zwei als nationale Stätten anerkannten Fahrgeschäften, die noch heute in Betrieb sind.
Die Zahl der Aktivitäten hier ist schier endlos: Entdecken Sie einen entlang des Ufers, durch sattgrünes Blattwerk verlaufenden Waldpfad, überschattet von Redwood-Bäumen. Machen Sie eine flotte Segeltour auf der majestätischen Monterey Bay. Oder erleben Sie auf einer 27 Kilometer langen Singletrail-Abfahrt mit dem Mountainbike, wie Ihnen das Adrenalin durch den Körper schießt.
Wenn Sie Anhänger der „Farm-to-Table“-Bewegung sind, dann sind Sie hier genau richtig. Die ökologische Landwirtschaft wurde buchstäblich am Center for Agroecology der University of California, Santa Cruz erfunden. Die dortigen Forscher haben sanftere, alternative Möglichkeiten entdeckt, um Obst und Gemüse zu züchten und zu ernten, im Einklang mit den Elementen der Natur. Auf den wöchentlichen Bauernmärkten werden lokal erzeugte Lebensmittel angeboten, die von Küchenchefs im ganzen County geschätzt werden.

2) Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park: Hike for miles or cool off in the river, the park’s towering redwoods and cool waters are perfect for summer heatwaves. 🌲 Leashed dogs allowed on certain trails and fire roads.
3) Loch Lomond Reservoir: This seasonal treasure is open all summer long (minus Wednesdays). Rent a paddle boat or a motor boat! Fish, picnic, hike and hang with a gorgeous Santa Cruz Mountain backdrop. (No swimming or contact with water allowed here. If you want to get in the water, go to Henry Cowell) 😊 Leashed dogs allowed.

🍑 This farm has an astonishing number of fruits (plus, walnuts and avocados)! From apples to citrus, stone fruit to figs, and loquats to persimmons, the orchard is always working on delicious produce. The farm’s bounty serves many restaurants in Santa Cruz, Carmel, Monterey, San Francisco and beyond. During the summer and fall, they also have an open fruit and flower stand at the farm on Sundays 10 am – 2 pm. U-pick fruit is also a seasonal possibility, so be sure to ask!
