The Santa Cruz Symphony will be performing:
- Antonín Dvořák: Symphonie no. 8, which was composed when Dvořák was elected to the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts in 1899. He wanted it to be a stark difference from his usual stormy romantic pieces and adapted this piece from cheery and lyrical Bohemian folk music.
- Eric Wolfgang Korngold: Violin Concerto, which was composed right after Korngold quit writing for the movie industry in 1947. He was annoyed that the American concert music critics would not take film scoring seriously, so he embarked on his “serious” career by adapting his movie scores into something the critics could better understand. The artist in Residence and Concertmaster, Nancy Zhou herself, will be performing!
- Josef Sekon: Spin will be performed for the very first time with the Santa Cruz Symphony. You will be listening to the world premiere. You will just have to go and listen to find out how it fits into the adaptations theme!
Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 7:30 pm, the performance will be at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
Sunday, November 3, 2024 at 2 pm, the performance will be at the Henry J. Mello Center for Performing Arts in Watsonville.
