Death & Saxes is a collaboration between two of Santa Cruz’s top jazz players. With John Bouwsma on saxophone and Joe Willis backing up on piano, they explore classic jazz, blues and contemporary styles.
Locals Love: The Alley Oop! atmosphere of an intimate, windowless 50-seat speakeasy with leather booths, a 1952 Baldwin baby grand piano, and vintage French fashion posters.
First Timers Miss: The dress code is “Dress sharp, speak easy”. Leave your flip flops at the beach.
Insights: There are no reservations. It is all first come, first served. The entrance off Jazz Alley and Birch Street has no prominent signage. There is no cover, but they focus on vintage cocktails and high end shared plates of food you will not want to miss. Happy hour is from 5-6pm.
