  • Watsonville & Pajaro Valley: Birding and Bucolic Landscapes

Watsonville & Pajaro Valley: Birding and Bucolic Landscapes

Strawberry fields and apple orchards provide a gorgeous backdrop that welcomes visitors. The Pajaro Valley – which can be seen from the summit of Mount Madonna – includes the communities of Corralitos, Freedom, La Selva Beach, Pajaro, Royal Oaks, Pajaro Dunes, and Watsonville. A variety of options awaits; from an early morning bird watching excursion to an afternoon at a u-pick farm or museum, sunset stroll on an expansive beach or attending a signature festival.

    Must See

The Agricultural History Museum – Located at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, the museum features restored horse-drawn equipment, interpretive exhibits and other vintage items.

Admire the expansive acres of produce as you drive through the region and marvel at the very place where fertile soil and mild climate yield some of the nation’s finest produce.

Watsonville Plaza, which serves as a gathering place for celebrations and festivals, surrounded by Victorian buildings and 1880s storefronts.

For culture lovers, the Henry J. Mello Center boasts the finest acoustics in the county.  Other attractions include the Pajaro Valley Arts Gallery featuring rotating exhibits, and the Pajaro Valley Historical Museum rich with the region’s past.

Annieglass – Renowned glass artist Ann Morhauser’s retail studio in Watsonville showcases the delicate art of tableware, vases, glassware and other items, all inspired by nature.

Watsonville & Pajaro Valley Top Five

    1. Take in a sunset at Manresa or Sunset State Beach.  Build a beach fire and enjoy s’mores as the sun sinks into the Monterey Bay.
    2. Try your hand at milking a “cow” at the Agricultural History Museum.
    3. Look for bird exhibits at the Wetlands of Watsonville Nature Center at Ramsay Park and then see how many you can spot on a free guided tour.
    4. Take an Historical Walking Tour of Watsonville or explore the town and discover the Apple Crate Murals – exact mural replicas of box and crate labels used in the 1900s.  Maps are available online
    5. Add to your Life List by cruising Elkhorn Slough by kayak and marvel at the abundance of birds, as well as otters, seals and sea lions.

  • Santa Cruz: Your Foodie City Favorites

Santa Cruz: Your Foodie City Favorites

We’re a bit spoiled here in Santa Cruz, California. Year-round farmer’s markets, craft beer & local wine, fresh fish, and creative chefs and bakers are commonplace. So many menus in town pivot on what’s fresh, local, sustainable, organic and delicious. This abundance of quality and pride in our food source has been gaining appreciation, and now, Santa Cruz has been named the #2 Foodie City in the United States. In celebration of this recent accolade, we’re going to share some foodie favorites happening in #SantaCruzNow.

    @santacruzfoodie-e1455790365820

    1. Pizza & Pasta from La Posta

La Posta’s fresh, market-driven menu inspired by the local community of farmers, foragers and fishermen will give an authentic taste of Italy. Try their brick oven pizzas or fresh pastas like the Saffron Tagliatelle with Lamb Bolognese.

    Hollins-House-e1455790960859

    2. Hollins House-Made

Often referred to as a hidden gem, Hollins House creates a delicious menu with the freshest ingredients – some even being from the 80 square foot garden onsite. Almost everything, down to the butter, bread and some of the cheeses, are entirely made from scratch; and the chef’s attention to detail in every dish is easily seen and tasted!

    Cremer-House-e1455792338924

    3. The Cremer House Delights

The Cremer House is the perfect place to go to sample several of Santa Cruz’s fine crafts – Santa Cruz crafted beers, meats, jams, and of course fruits and vegetables. Heck, they even serve on ceramic plates created by a local artist in Davenport! The Cremer House shares their belief of “supporting and protecting organic farmers. Better for farms, better for the environment, better for you – and it tastes better too.”

    Penny-Ice-CreameryBlog

    4. Penny Ice Creamery from Scratch

The Penny Ice Creamery is the only ice cream shop in town making delicious ice cream in-house, completely from scratch. With locally farmed and organic ingredients, they create an ever changing menu that features a variety of intriguing flavors. A few recent scoops include: Candied Buddha’s Hand, Brown Butter Balsamic, Blood Orange, Tahitian Vanilla Bean, Cardamom Pistachio Chocolate Chip, Candy Cap Mushroom, Honey Yogurt Walnut Jam, and Chocolate Sorbet.

    PopUp-Counter-Photo-Garrick-Ramirez-e1455796858573

    5. Pop-In to the Pop-Ups

In the foodie scene there’s something exciting about deliciousness being offered only temporarily. With limited hours and phrases like “open until sold out”, the foodie buzz is only natural. Just about two years after opening, PopUp continues to offer a variety of guest chefs that grace Santa Cruz with their sought-after specialties. With regulars like Manresa Bread, Lawman Ramen, Mortal Dumpling, & a slew of others, Santa Cruz has fully embraced these temporary eateries. Newer on the scene is the Food Lounge, a commercial incubator kitchen that gives many Santa Cruz chefs who may not have brick and mortar a place to share their passion for food.

Clearly this list is just a small sampling of some foodie favorites, but we’d love to hear from you on what’s your beloved spot, dish or ingredient from Santa Cruz County. Share your #SCFoodieFaves on Instagram for possible repost or blog feature!

  • Wildlife Watching in Santa Cruz County

Wildlife Watching in Santa Cruz County

With an impressive variety of wildlife watching experiences for visitors to enjoy, Santa Cruz County has become a destination for nature lovers.

    Look For

Gray and humpback whales as they migrate through the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, travelling 12,000 miles round-trip from the arctic to warmer waters in Mexico to mate and nurse their young.

The touch tanks at the Seymour Marine Discover Center at Long Marine Lab, where sea stars, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and sea anemones bring the Monterey Bay alive.

An amazing diversity of birds in Pajaro Valley’s rivers and sloughs, which provide a rich habitat. Opt for a free guided tour of the wetlands, or head north and track hummingbirds and quail at the UCSC Arboretum.

    Did You Know?

The new Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center near the Santa Cruz Wharf brings the sea life of the Monterey Bay to land, combining technology with interactive displays.

North of town, Año Nuevo State Reserve is the largest mainland breeding colony in North America of the northern elephant seal.  In winter, visitors can view these lumbering mammals up close on a docent-led tour from December through March.

That over 200 species of permanent and migratory birds thrive in Watsonville’s 800 acres of wetlands. Free tours of the wetlands are hosted every Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Venturing out by boat affords some of the best views of sea life. Join a sailing charter on a luxury yacht from the Santa Cruz Harbor, or rent a boat at the harbor and the Santa Cruz and Capitola wharfs.

  • Pajaro Dunes Resort Inspires Rest and Rejuvenation

Pajaro Dunes Resort Inspires Rest and Rejuvenation

About a half-hour south of Santa Cruz, at the end of a long road lined with strawberry fields, exists a secluded coastal treasure known as Pajaro Dunes Resort. Nestled among this gated community of vacation rentals and residential property, sits an array of condominiums, townhouses and oceanfront homes along a sprawling, flat, pristine beach.

    pajarodune-overview

Pajaro Dunes Resort provides the peaceful backdrop and natural surroundings for endless vacation and meeting possibilities: a wedding overlooking the lagoon, a retreat warmed by a stone fireplace, a simple, yet humbling, staycation. Companies seeking to boost morale and creativity can follow in the footsteps of late Apple founder Steve Jobs, who chose Pajaro Dunes as the inspirational setting for brainstorming conferences.

Unique in both design and decor, each fully furnished property features the comforts of home without the distractions. That home away from home feeling is further enhanced by the small details: collections of books and board games, a chessboard displayed near a window overlooking the ocean. All of it saying, “Slow down, put that to-do list away and enjoy some quality time with one another.”

On the flip side, activities for all ages abound. Walking, hiking, biking, tennis, volleyball, basketball and even a ropes course are available for recreation and team building. Two miles of cool, sandy, private beach invite long strolls, collecting shells and sand dollars by day and enjoying the warmth of a bonfire by night. Birding enthusiasts will enjoy the area’s diverse wild bird population in and around Watsonville Slough Watershed and the mouth of the Pajaro River.

    PajaroDunesCollage1

No matter how long your stay at Pajaro Dunes Resort, expect to take deep breaths of fresh ocean air and feel replenished once again. Join the many families and businesses that return year after year to take advantage of one of Santa Cruz County’s best kept secrets.

  • Make a Family Play Date in Santa Cruz County

Make a Family Play Date in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County attracts visitors of all ages. From children who eagerly await summer break to grandparents who can recall fond memories of seaside beauty pageants of yesterday, Santa Cruz County is the perfect spot for multi-generational families to spend time reconnecting.

    Look For…

Year-around family-friendly events hosted by the Museum of Art and History, for the artistically-inclined.

The admission-free, legendary Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk – California’s oldest seaside amusement park – which has thrilled visitors for 107 years. Check out the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster and the Looff Carousel, two national historic landmarks.

The friendly shark who greets visitors in a specially-designed tank at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Lab.(Guess what? It can also be gently petted!)

Sea fossils embedded in the hillside as you ride Roaring Camp Railroads’ steam train up Bear Mountain. Millions of years ago, these forested trails were underwater. After the train ride, walk next door to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, where a wide, stroller and wheelchair-accessible path offer a close-up view of the redwoods.

Technology-driven exhibits at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center near the Santa Cruz Wharf.

    Did You Know?

Ms. Blue, the blue whale skeleton which sits outside the Seymour Marine Discovery Center is one of the largest blue whale skeletons in the world.

Now an indoor miniature golf course, The Plunge at the Cocoanut Grove was once a bathhouse where visitors enjoyed the benefits of “natural medicine” of bathing in salt water.

You can meet “Abraham Lincoln” at the Civil War Battles and Encampment at Roaring Camp Railroads every Memorial Day Weekend. Other wild and wooly characters can be found at the Summer Gathering of Mountain Men and more special events.

One of the best places for tidepool exploration is Natural Bridges State Beach, where little ones will delight at the tiny crabs, sea stars and sea anemones nestling in underwater crevices when the tide goes out. In wintertime, families can explore the park’s eucalyptus grove, thick with clusters of hibernating monarch butterflies.

During summer, a Friday night concert series at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Capitola’s Wednesday Night Twilight Concerts in Esplanade Park are free music events that welcome kids. Wednesday nights at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, free summertime movies are shown on a big screen set on the sand, with family favorites from the 1980s bringing the nostalgia back, while enticing a new generation of fans.

Astronomy programs, Bug Day, campfires and kid-friendly guided walks are hosted by State Parks on a year-around basis throughout the county.

In south county, free family nature walks begin at the Wetlands of Watsonville Nature Center, where binoculars are provided to help spot the amazing bird species that call this habitat home.

On the Fourth of July, Scotts Valley’s Skypark is the place to be for family fun with a barbecue and fireworks to end the night.

  • Launch Your Vacation from Scotts Valley

Launch Your Vacation from Scotts Valley

Santa Cruz County is known for its unique landscape of mountains, valleys, and redwood forests, along with the unforgettable 29 miles of beaches and coastline. Vacationers looking to explore the county find both peace and convenience when booking their stay in Scotts Valley. Just a 10 minute drive to the beach and even less time to the redwoods, Scotts Valley is an ideal location to launch your Santa Cruz County vacation.

    STAY

The gorgeous Hilton Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley has fairy tale charm with its castle-like architecture and setting among the redwoods. The lobby itself is a sight to behold with its grand entry and 50-foot high ceilings. And with their recently renovated suites and guest rooms, heated pool and Jacuzzi, fitness studio, and on-site restaurant and bar, you’ll have every reason to want to make the Hilton your vacation homebase.

Another stellar option is the Best Western Plus – Scotts Valley Inn. With the convenience of being right “over the hill” from the Bay Area, this comfortable and conveniently located hotel makes for a great vacation or business stay. You’ll also enjoy the pool in the often 10 degrees warmer temps of Scotts Valley compared to Santa Cruz.

And the recently opened Four Points by Sheraton Scotts Valley hosts 128 rooms, 1,400 square feet of market-leading meeting facilities, plus a boardroom with attached patio, full service breakfast dining, evening dinner and light bites, and a large veranda surrounded by the upland slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains and vineyards.

    FAMILY TRAVELERS

Beyond the convenience, Scotts Valley is also an exceptional community known for its family-friendly appeal and offerings. With many parks including county favorite, Skypark, you can stretch your legs, ride bikes, play a game of bocce ball, and enjoy the redwood mountains surrounding the pleasant valley. Skypark also features a pump track, skate park, and a popular dog park for locals, and visitors traveling with their pooch. And speaking of pet-friendly travel, both the Hilton Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley and Best Western Scotts Valley welcome your four-legged companion.

    EVENTS, FARMERS MARKET AND MORE

There are many popular and seasonal, family-friendly events that take place in Scotts Valley including: Music at the Park, Movies at the Park, Food Truck events, the Annual Art, Wine & Beer Festival, the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks Show, Car Shows, and many more. See some of the upcoming Scotts Valley events here.

Santa Cruz County has a true appreciation for art and Scotts Valley is no exception. As you explore the area you will find many colorful murals and art installations that add charm, and often historical significance to the area. Three notable murals are found at the Scotts Valley Public Library, Camp Evers, and the CineLux Theater – which is a great spot to take a break from the travel activity with some popcorn and a movie.

Clearly Scotts Valley is a convenient, comfortable, and family-friendly locale in the county, but here are some other fun, nearby ideas to inspire adventure and discovery during your stay:

    • All Aboard at Roaring Camp Railroads! Ride through ancient redwoods on an old-fashioned steam train, or hop on a beach train and arrive at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Did you know your dog can ride the train?
    • Continue your redwood journey with a hike through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, adjacent to Roaring Camp Railroads. The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is a must for all ages and levels–it’s stroller and wheelchair-friendly and features unique old-growth redwoods.
    • Looking for an adrenaline high? Experience the redwoods like never before–from 150 feet up in the air! Mount Hermon Adventures offers 2-hour guided eco-tours through the redwood canopy on 6 zip lines and two sky bridges.
    • Book a tee time at Pasatiempo Golf Club, a world famous course designed by renowned golf architect Alister MacKenzie. Enjoy rich history, challenging holes, and breathtaking views of the Monterey Bay on one of the few Alister MacKenzie originals available for public play.
    • Escape to the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region where sipping opportunities abound. Plan a vineyard picnic, meet winemakers, and enjoy a leisurely day of wine tasting and finding that perfect bottle to savor back home or on the balcony of your suite.
    • Hit the beach! Scotts Valley is just 10 minutes away from the beach and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Thrill rides and cool waves will complete your quintessential beach town experience!
