Journey to view a large colony of Northern elephant seals, guided by your docent naturalist on this moderate 3-mile, 2.5 hour adventure. In the month of December, male elephant seals, or bulls, arrive along the shore of Año Nuevo State Park to establish hierarchy, while pregnant females come ashore to birth to their pups. The trail to see the elephant seals includes a 3-4 mile hike and is considered moderate with varied terrain including sand dunes. Guided walks run 2.5 hours from start to finish and operate daily from early morning to mid-afternoon. These popular guided walks take place rain or shine, so be prepared for windy, rainy conditions as well as muddy trails. Layered clothing, sturdy shoes, and rain gear are strongly advised. Umbrellas and strollers are not permitted. Pets are not allowed in the park. During the guided walk season, walks are offered daily for families, individuals, or groups. Children age 17 and under require one adult chaperone for each 10 children. Each walk has a capacity of 20 people, including chaperones. Guided walks begin mid December and continue every day until March 31st with exceptions on December 25th (Christmas) and the last weekend in January. Online reservations are recommended, especially weekends and holidays. People with accessibility needs may reserve an equal access tour along the boardwalk. There are no ticket refunds or exchanges for cancellations, no shows, weather, or late arrivals. Refunds are issued only when the park staff must cancel a walk. As much notice as possible will be given in the event of a cancellation.
