VSCC Planning for Smart Meetings Event

This month, VSCC Director of Sales and Marketing Flavia Oliveira plans to attend an industry event designed to attract meeting and conference planners to Santa Cruz County, hosted by Smart Meetings magazine. This event – one of a series of Smart Meetings Experiences – allows meeting planners to network with prospective destination marketing organizations. The event will be hosted at the London Hotel in West Hollywood, and 2022 is the fourth year VSCC has attended on the destination’s behalf. Flavia will meet with meeting and conference planners from major corporations.

The day consists of one-on-one, pre-set appointments, which allows for VSCC staff to meet with organizations to share meeting venue information, promote VSCC teambuilding vendors, and provide potential activity ideas for corporate groups and conferences. With such close proximity to the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz County echoes the innovative pulse of Silicon Valley, with the more personal meeting facilities offering juxtaposition to the intentional campus experience of major tech companies, surrounded by the natural beauty of state parks and beaches.

Mask Mandate to End

Effective Wednesday, February 16, 2022, Santa Cruz County will no longer require the use of face masks indoors. Unvaccinated individuals over age 2 will continue to be required to wear masks in all indoor public settings. Businesses, venue operators, and hosts may determine their own paths forward to protect staff and patrons and may choose to require all patrons to wear masks. Please bring a mask with you when traveling for the health and safety of the Santa Cruz County community, local business owners and their staff, and those around you. Bay Area health officers from throughout the region, in alignment with the California Department of Public Health, continue to strongly recommend masks be used as an effective tool to prevent the spread of the virus especially when case rates are high, or when additional personal protection is needed. Continuing to mask in indoor public settings, especially crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, remains the safest choice for an individual and protects those who are medically vulnerable or are not able to get vaccinated.

State of the Travel Industry

The U.S. Travel Association released their State of the Travel Industry address last week. In case you missed it, you can watch USTA President and CEO Roger Dow deliver it here. Roger reported on success with new initiatives like the Meetings Mean Business Coalition and Let’s Go There, as well as the Destination Analysts’ survey which indicated that more than 80 percent of Americans are excited to plan a vacation in the next six months. He also shared that USTA is advocating for the passage of the Restoring Brand USA Act, which would provide emergency relief funding to the United States’ destination marketing organization: an important step in rebuilding our global market share following the steep pandemic setback in inbound travel. Read a summary of his remarks here.
