Phase-Out of Single-Use Plastics in Lodging Properties to Begin

Earlier this month, theSanta Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to eliminate single-use plastic shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles from local hotels, motels and vacation rentals. The ordinance affects properties within the unincorporated areas of the county and would go into effect Dec. 31, 2020.

Under the ordinance, owner-occupied “hosted rentals” are exempt, and exemptions are available for those with disabilities or special needs.

This ban is likely the first prohibition on single-use bottles of personal care products at visitor accommodations in the U.S. Santa Cruz County was among the first to ban single-use to go plastic bags, polystyrene products, plastic straws and other disposable plastics products, and has been recognized for its environmental leadership over the last several decades.

Hotels and resorts, airlines, cruise ships and other travel and tourism-related industries have also taken steps to implement initiatives to reduce and eliminate single-use plastic practices as well.

VSCC Participates in WTM and European Sales Mission

Hosted by Visit California and its delegation comprised of destinations, attractions, and hotels statewide, Laura Manriquez, Director of Sales and Marketing participated in World Travel Market London (WTM) November 4 – 6. This business-to-business event presents a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and international travel buyers. Following WTM, Visit California hosted a German Sales Mission, where Laura met with over 120 agents. Global Communications Experts, VSCC’s German PR agency, provided press packets to media in attendance. A two-day sales mission followed, coordinated by MSi - VSCC’s travel trade agency in Germany and Visit California’s agency of record - with four tour operators between Hannover and Frankfurt. Five in-market trainings and product development meetings were then conducted in Zurich. In London, SLC - with whom VSCC is working for additional travel trade exposure in the UK market - supplemented Laura’s time in-market with an additional 15 appointments with tour operators. VSCC’s presence in the German market is growing, with four marketing campaigns ongoing through February, and branding efforts on billboards at three major train stations in Bremen, Wolfsburg & Oldenburg.
