Many Santa Cruz area lodging properties are under construction, and include a new Residence Inn by Marriott, and a Courtyard by Marriott. A new Residence Inn by Marriott in Scotts Valley will feature 120 rooms including studios and one-bedroom accommodations. Housed in a four-story modern building, construction of the Marriott is timely, as the soon-to-be-open 1440 Project, a multimillion dollar retreat center built on the site of the former Bethany University, is expected to draw visitors from throughout the country. Lodging demand is expected to exceed supply with the opening of 1440, and the Residence Inn by Marriott will supplement lodging needs for the facility, which will have a capacity of 800 conference attendees. The property is expected to open late summer 2017 or early fall. And a new 150-room Courtyard by Marriott in the beach area within walking distance to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Downtown Santa Cruz, will feature 151 rooms, an 1,000-square-foot onsite restaurant and lounge, and 3,400-square-feet of meeting space. Amenities include a full-service spa and salon, an outdoor pool with ocean views, fitness center, underground parking, several large meeting room spaces, and outdoor deck area with fire pits. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2016 and the hotel is scheduled to open in fall 2018.
