Guided Backpacking Adventures with California State Parks

For the second summer in a row, California State Parks is offering Naturalist-Led Backpacking Adventures through the Santa Cruz Mountains! Whether you're new to backpacking or a seasoned nomad, there's an adventure waiting for you! This year there will be five excursions throughout June to September with trips varying in length from one to three nights. These adventures will trek through Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Castle Rock State Park, Butano State Park, and Portola Redwoods State Park.

Say “Auld Lang Syne” to holiday indulgences and start the New Year fresh with an inspiring hike in a beautiful setting. On January 1st, state parks throughout the country will ring in 2016 with First Day Hikes, a fourth annual program that offers free, guided hikes to all. Below, we’ve assembled a guide to outings being offered in Santa Cruz County. Hikes vary in length and rigor but all are designed with families in mind. So add a warm jacket and some outdoor gear to your holiday list and hit the trails with us on New Years Day.

I am standing on a crowded wooden platform, over 100 feet up, in the branches of a “baby” Redwood tree, and I’m terrified. An extremely talkative tour guide is telling me there’s nothing to worry about, “It’s nice and easy.” But that seems much easier said than done when I’m gazing down at the gully below, lush and scenic as it may be, and at the thin zip line stretching before me.
