Discover Abbott Square, Downtown’s Buzzworthy New Destination

The latest buzz in Santa Cruz is Abbott Square, a dynamic plaza and marketplace that’s enlivened already buzzing downtown with six new restaurants, two bars, plenty of al fresco courtyard seating, and a lineup of free performances and public art. The $5 million endeavor is five years in the making, and a joint project of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) and developer John McEnery IV who created a similar community marketplace in San Jose.

Celebrate 30 Years of the Screaming Hand!

If there was ever a time to celebrate a severed, screaming hand, this past Halloween-themed month of October seemed like the right one. The blue Screaming Hand, that indelible icon of skateboarding culture, celebrated its 30th birthday with creation of an eye-popping exhibition at the Santa Cruz Museum of History & Art (MAH). Created in 1985 by Santa Cruz graphics artist Jim Phillips, the howling appendage—which has been emblazoned on t-shirts, skateboards, and stickers all over the world—is honored with a fitting tribute to its influential legacy.
