Work It: Chef Marshall Bishop of Soif

All photos by Garrick Ramirez

Since opening in 2002, Soif has been our go-to spot for a globe-hopping wines, perfectly paired dishes, and a fetching, candle-lit atmosphere. Now, new chef Marshall Bishop promises to elevate the experience further. After working alongside superstar chefs such as Thomas Keller, Bishop is bringing some sparkle to the Santa Cruz food scene. In between his menu planning and dropping off bowls of complimentary spiced popcorn at diners’ tables, we sat down with Chef Bishop to chat food, Santa Cruz, and his method for creating recipes.

How to Dress Like a Local

Santa Cruz County definitely marches to the beat of its own drum when it comes to fashion. It’s comfort first and the more outdoorsy you look, the better. Going to the store in your active wear is perfectly acceptable (yes, the active wear video describes the area perfectly) and yoga leggings stay on hours after class. There are of course plenty of fashion conscious individuals among us, but the relaxed surf culture has a strong influence on almost everyone’s style, especially on the weekends.

Artist Jared Leake’s Santa Cruz

One glance at Jared Leake’s surf-filled artwork and it's clear the former East Coaster was lured west by endless summers and the California dream. “The warm climate, outdoor culture, and epic Pacific Ocean are what drew me out,” he says of his decision to move to California in 2011. Today, the Santa Cruz transplant makes the most of his adopted home through surfing, trekking local trails, and creating contemporary artwork that captures the good vibes and striking scenery of the local landscape in a new way. We asked him to share a little about his process, where he goes to get inspired, and where he finds the perfect pint of local brew.
