Volunteers are the backbone of the Capitola Art & Wine Festival

With 40,000 people expected to attend the 29th anniversary of the popular Capitola Art & Wine Festival this weekend (September 10 and 11), it’s no surprise that approximately 400 behind-the-scenes volunteers are needed to insure its success. Twenty Santa Cruz Mountain wineries are showcased, so it takes about 200 people to sell wine glasses, staff winery booths and handle wine bottle sales. All volunteers must attend a training session to insure that rules are understood and adhered to. Volunteer John Blackman appreciates how smoothly the festival is run. Although he resides in Colorado, he makes the annual trip to assist Bargetto Winery. The winery management normally prefers using Bargetto staff to interact with the public, but they eagerly make an exception for John. Another eager volunteer, Al Mercado likes assisting wineries new to the festival so he can offer knowledge he’s gained from pouring over the period of a dozen years. He says, “I’m a free-wheeler, it’s a fun festival, and I love having dinner by the ocean afterwards.” Gal pals Kate Greene, Judi Tedesco and Jo Kingsbury volunteer for the same winery on the same day each year. “It’s great for seeing old friends, plus the shopping is the best!” says Kate, “and the winery representative gets a chance to wander since he knows he can count on us.” Wine booth rules include: Collect designated amount of tokens (new this year) before wine is poured Consumer must wear wristband showing ID check Person consuming wine sample must present token. Use 2 oz. pour spouts for each serving. (No double pours) No sampling allowed during shift Capitola Chamber director Toni Castro says, “We are so fortunate to host our festival in a village with such a beautiful beach setting. Enjoy the atmosphere of newly redone shops, walk down to the beach; it’s all right here!” Be sure to visit this great event, a part of Santa Cruz CVC's "Fall Festival" series, and dive into the Secret Summer this weekend!
