My grandparent’s owned a motel down the street from the boardwalk when I was a kid so it was our second home on weekends and summer when school was out. We moved back East when I was 10 and the Boardwalk and the sand in my feet is what I missed the most living in California. I moved back when I was 25 and met my now husband who stayed at my grandparent’s motel when he was a kid take me back there for my first time in fifteen years. I love the smell and warmth of the sand on my feet and missed my walks and beach combing with Grandpa who had already passed on. It was like heaven being back to visit.

I was forced to move away from the Santa Cruz area by the economy in 2009. We now live in mid-Missouri and miss it soo very badly.

A few years ago my family moved to Northern California and left my birthplace Santa Cruz behind. I have missed it ever since and have not even been able to visit in years. I am now married and have a 4 year old daughter and would love to take them to Santa Cruz and show them where I grew up and show them why I love Santa Cruz.

This year my daughter, our oldest child will graduate 8th grade and my youngest son will “graduate” kindergarten it would be a great way to celebrate with a trip to the beach. The last time we were in the Santa Cruz area, the youngest was 2 and he was afraid of the sand he would not walk on it, or play with it when I tried to show him how to build a sandcastle. He only stayed on my beach towel. He saw a photo and now he says he wants to go to the beach.

As a native of South Carolina and an elementary school teacher for over 30 years that has has only been exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, I would love to visit Santa Cruz. This would be my way to be able to be a better classroom teacher. I can think of endless ways to use thia as a teaching experience, and to acquaint my students with another part of the country and the Pacific Ocean. What a great learning experience!
